A pledge of transparency.
At La Converse, we believe in the power of a people-centered approach rooted in listening, understanding, and respect. For us, transparent and fair news coverage means first and foremost that everyone's stories are heard. In the service of our community, our reporting focuses not only on information, but also on proposing solutions and ideas to bridge the gaps in the issues we cover.
OUR 10 VALUES FOR DIALOGUE-DRIVEN JOURNALISM
1. Respectful journalism:
As a media company, we are aware that our choices impact people's lives. We believe that words and actions matter. At La Converse, you are not simply the focus of a story you are part of a community. We take the time to listen to you and work with you before, during, and after publishing our stories:
2. Journalism powered by your needs:
We don't believe in poverty porn. Our stories must respond to community needs, issues, and concerns. Our team practices anti-oppressive, trauma-sensitive journalism and understands that historical and political undercurrents still affect communities today.
3. Relational journalism:
We don't merely skim over a topic to extract a story; rather, we are committed to consensual conversations, human relationships, and sharing nuanced, untold stories that reveal a range of truths.
4. Transparent journalism:
Journalists are among the most distrusted people in the world today. We want to regain your trust by sharing how we craft our stories with you. Why do we choose a particular topic? How do we do our research? What angle do we take? What do we ignore? What mistakes have we made? What have we learned?
5. A bottom-up approach:
Our topics begin with you. We focus on systems – not symptoms. We don't want to talk about people; we want people to talk to us about the things that matter to them.
6. A fair structure:
Being a journalist comes with a lot of responsibility. At La Converse, we're keen to honour that commitment and build a team of journalists representing our society. This means putting diversity and inclusion into practice beyond buzzwords and group photos.
7. Impact before clicks:
Our raison d'être is the search for non-viral stories. We want to take the time to dig into topics that interest you.
8. Introspection:
At La Converse, we always try to do better and never assume that we have all the answers. We are committed to always questioning the impact of our choices and pondering the best ways to serve you.
9. Constant evolution:
We value ideas and listen to everyone's input. We strive to create a community that accepts disagreement, encourages risk-taking, and sees failure as a valuable learning experience. Join us in this evolution.
10. Collaborating for greater impact:
We collaborate with like-minded media outlets and other organizations to pool our resources, data, and stories. Wherever possible, we make the data behind our investigations publicly available.
Words from La Converse Founder and Editor-in-Chief, Lela Savic:
"La Converse stands for what journalism should be: human. For me, beyond the public interest, journalism is a vehicle for social change. And that means democratizing the profession itself. With La Converse, I feel I've created a place where we use journalism as a tool for change, where we listen to citizens, question power, and develop a bond of trust with the people we serve."
“I'm so happy to be working for this outlet and doing it with people who are passionate about the journalism of the future."
