We are nominated in the Impact Journalism category for the editorial project Hood Heroes. The LION AWARDS recognize and promote independent local media. We are going to Chicago, Illinois for this celebration! Hood Heroes is a series of reports that highlights “heroes” from marginalized communities in Montreal. By showcasing local successes and giving young people a voice. What started as a pilot project with four episodes is now a series of 17 portraits!

Between the jungle and the system: The mental health of asylum seekers on Roxham Road ” seeks to explore a new dimension of the ordeal that asylum seekers experience. Once they arrive on Canadian soil, they face problems that test their physical and physical health. But how does the irregular crossing of many territories affect the mental health of asylum seekers and what does the system offer to help them? La Converse looked at the issue as Roxham Road was preparing to close in March 2023. This story was written by Djazia Bousnina.

The report” From Roxham to asylum land: a precarious path ” started with a question: Why did Fritznel Richard leave Canada and how did he live here? He was an asylum seeker who came from Haiti via Roxham Road. In December 2022, Fritznel Richard wanted to return to the United States on foot. Two weeks later, he was found frozen to death in the forest along the path. For this investigation, the journalists met with Haitian asylum seekers and some of their chaperones.
